Welcome to a special page dedicated to the woman who inspired it all—my first beautician, my Granny, Doris Jean Brown.
She wasn’t just my grandmother; she was my mentor, my guide, and the heart of my journey into the beauty industry. Her passion, unwavering faith, and strength shaped my path.
She was the oldest of 14 children and a mother of 8. She always had a passion for hair, a talented, and well-respected cosmetologist in Dallas, TX. As a child, I spent many hours in her beauty shop, watching her work skillfully with her hands. At times, I had the opportunity to paint her clients' nails while they waited under the dryer, or I would do her pedicure after a long day of standing in the shop. I would often daydream about one day taking over her business—so much so, I would say to her, "One day, I can take over your business."
In January 2021, I became the owner of Va’Lour Beauty Bar. On the same day, my Granny passed away. Her passing was sudden, unexpected, and heartbreaking. While mourning her loss, I pursued my childhood dream—becoming a licensed cosmetologist and following in her footsteps as an entrepreneur. Though I regret not having the chance to tell her the name of my business, Doris Jean is the inspiration behind "Va’Lour." The name reflects her—a woman of valor, courage, and strength.
My Granny's influence continues to guide me as I build Va’Lour Beauty Bar into a place where every client feels beautiful and empowered. She taught me that beauty is more than just appearances—it’s about confidence and the care we show ourselves and others.
Va’Lour Beauty Bar is a tribute to her—a space to celebrate beauty, strength, confidence, and self-care. Thank you for being a part of the legacy she built, one that continues to inspire and empower.
Proverbs 31:25
"She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come."
This verse always reminds me of my grandmother, Doris Jean. Her strength and honor were the foundation of her character, and through her example, I’ve learned to face life’s challenges with courage and faith. I carry this legacy with me in every step I take at Va’Lour Beauty Bar. Doris Jean was indeed "clothed with strength and dignity," and I strive to honor her legacy by fostering these same qualities in the clients I serve every day.
